Allegation Bonds for Marriage Licences

ALLEGATION BOND TO THE LICENCE FOR THE MARRIAGE OF WILLIAM BEALY AND SARAH GASKELL 1765

The third Day of May In the Year of our LORD One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty five

ON which Day appeared personally William BAYLEY of Disley in the Parish of Stockport within the County & Diocese of Chester Bread Baker and being sworn on the HOLY EVANGELISTS, alleged and made Oath as follows, That he is of the Age of thirty Years and upwards, and a Widower and intends to marry Sarah GASKELL of Manchester in the County of Lancaster & Diocese afor’d aged thirty Years and upwards, and a Spinster not knowing or believing any lawful Let, or Impediment, by reason of any Praecontract, entered into before the Twenty-fifth Day of March, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty Four, Consanguinity, Affinity, or any other Cause whatsoever, to hinder the said intended Marriage: And he prayed a Licence to solemnize the said Marriage in the parish Church of Stockport aforesaid.  In which said parish they the said William BAYLEY further made Oath, That the said William BAYLEY hath had his usual Abode for the space of Four Weeks last past.

KNOW all Men by these Presents, That we William BAYLEY of Disley in the parish of Stockport with the County & Diocese of Chester Bread-baker & John CLARK of Stockport afor:d Miller are bolden and firmly bound unto the Right Reverend Father in God Edmund by Divine Permission, Lord Bishop of Chester in the Sum of two hundred Pounds, of good and lawful Money of Great-Britain, to be paid unto the said Right Reverend Father, his lawful Attorney, Executors, Administrators or Assigns, To which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves and Each of us severally for and in the whole, our Heirs, Executors, and Administrators, and the Heirs, Executors, and Administrators, of Each of us firmly by these Presents.  Sealed with our Seals, and dated the third Day of May in the fifth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord Geo the 3rd King of Great-Britain, France, and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, and in the Year of our Lord God, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty five

THE Condition of this Obligation is such, That if the above-bounden William BAYLEY & Sarah GASKELL now licenced to be married together, be neither of Consanguinity, or Affinity, the one to the other, within the Degrees prohibited for Marriage: If also there be no Let or Impediment, by Reason of any Precontract, entered into before the Twenty-fifth Day of March, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty Four, or any other lawful Cause whatsoever, but that they may be lawfully married together, both by the Laws of G O D, and this Land: Moreover, If the Persons, whose Consent is required by Law in this behalf, be thereunto agreeing: And lastly, If the said Marriage be done and solemnized in such Manner, as in the Licence to them granted is limited:  Then this Obligation to be void, or else to remain in full Force and Virtue.

ALLEGATION BOND TO THE LICENCE FOR THE MARRIAGE OF WILLIAM BAILEY AND HANNAH LOMAS 1793

KNOW all Men by these Presents that We William BAILEY of Disley in the County of Chester Weaver and Isaac LOMAS of Thornelee in the Parish of Chapel en le Frith & County of Derby, Farmer are held and firmly bound to the Reverend the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral Church of Lichfield in one hundred Pounds of lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid to the said Dean and Chapter on their certain Attorney Executors Administrators or Assigns for the true payment whereof we bind ourselves and each of us by himself for the whole and every part thereof and the Heirs Executors and Administrators of us and each of us firmly by these Presents Sealed with our Seals Dated the twelfth Day of March in the thirty third Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defend of the Faith and in the Year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety three

The Condition of this Obligation is such That if hereafter there shall not appear any lawful Let or Impediment by reason of any Pre Contract entered into before the twenty fifth Day of March One Thousand Seven Hundred and fifty four Consanguinity Affinity or any other lawful Means whatsoever but that William BAILEY of Disley in the County of Chester Batchelor and Hannah LOMAS of Thornelee in the Parish of Chapel en le Frith & County of Derby Spinster aged 21 years & upwards may lawfully solmnize Marriage together and in the same afterwards lawfully remain and continue for Man and Wife according to the Laws in that behalf provided And moreover if there be not at this present Time any Action Suit Plaint Quarrel or Demand moved or depending before any Judge Ecclesiastical or Temporal for or containing any such lawful Impediment between the said Parties nor that either of them be of any other Parish or of better Estate or Degree than to the Judge at granting of the Licence is suggested and by him sworn to before Samuel Grundy Surrogate the twelfth Day of March One Thousand seven hundred and ninety three

And lastly if the same Marriage shall be openly solmnized in the Church or Chapel in the Licence specified between the Hours appointed in the Constitutions Ecclesiastical confirmed and according to the Form of the Book of Common Prayer now by Law established And if the above bounden William BAILEY and Isaac LOMAS do save harmless the said Dean and Chapter their Surrogates and others their Officers whatsoever by Reason of the Premises Then this Obligation to be void or else to remain in full force and Virtue

Chapel en le Frith March 12th 1793

On which day appeared personally William BAILEY of Disley in the County of Chester Batchelor; and being sworn on the Holy Evangalists made Oath as follows; that he is of the age of Twenty one years & upwards and a Batchelor, has lived at Disley for the space of four weeks last past and intends to marry Hannah LOMAS of Thornelee in the Parish of Chapel en le Frith & County of Derby, Spinster aged Twenty one years & upwards; not knowing or believing any lawful Lett or Impediment whatsoever to hinder the said intended marriage.  Therefore he prayed a Licence to be granted to solemnize the said Marriage in the Parish Church of Chapel en le Frith aforesaid; in which said Parish of Chapel en le Frith the said William BAILEY further made oath that the said Hannah LOMAS has had her usual abode for the space of four weeks last past
